Fwd: Situational Awareness Statement: Hazardous Weather Today and Thursday

DATE:         September 11, 2013

TIME:          12:30 PM

SUBJECT:  Hazardous Weather Today and Thursday

Situation

Today:  Hot and humid weather may give way to a few scattered to severe thunderstorms in western MA after 6 or 7 pm this evening (see graphic below). The primary threat for these thunderstorms is damaging straight-line winds, but there is also the possibility of large hail, heavy rainfall, cloud to ground lightning and scattered power outages. Locally heavy rainfall could produce urban, low-lying and poor drainage flooding as well as some small stream flooding. There is a low probability that these storms will stay organized enough to reach into Eastern MA, but if they do, they will arrive after 10 pm this evening.

Thursday: There is a greater probability of more widespread showers and thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and night as a cold front moves across the region.  Primary threat from any storms will be damaging wind gusts and large hail.  Localized heavy rainfall producing flash flooding will also be a concern. This thunderstorm threat will initially be focused across the interior, and will eventually shift to the coastal plain on Thursday night.
