The National Weather Service issued a Special Weather Statement at 3:15 PM. As forecast, temperatures in the southeast have begun to drop. Additionally, there are some bands of heavy snow that are resulting in snowfall rates of 1” per hour, and some areas may pick up another 3” to 5” of snow before the storm ends. Snowfall totals to the north of the Massachusetts Turnpike may reach 15” to 18”, with up to 20” in some areas.
The Special Weather Statement includes the following information:
AT 310 PM...VERY COLD AIR CONTINUED TO PLUNGE SOUTHEASTWARD TOWARD
THE COAST. THE TEMPERATURE HAD DROPPED INTO THE MID TEENS FROM
PROVIDENCE TO TAUNTON AND AREAS IN SOUTHERN RHODE ISLAND AND
WESTERN CAPE COD WILL DROP INTO THE TEENS BY 430 PM. ANY SLUSH OR
STANDING WATER WILL RAPIDLY FREEZE CAUSING HAZARDOUS ROAD AND
PAVEMENT CONDITIONS.
IN ADDITION MODERATE TO OCCASIONALLY HEAVY SNOW WAS FALLING ACROSS
MOST OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND EXCEPT CAPE COD AND THE ISLANDS.
UP TO AN INCH AN HOUR CAN BE EXPECTED INTO THE EVENING HOURS.
THIS MEANS THAT SOME AREAS COULD RECEIVE ANOTHER 3 TO 5 INCHES OF
SNOW. THIS WILL BRING STORM TOTALS CLOSER TO 15 TO 18 INCHES ACROSS
PORTIONS OF MASSACHUSETTS FROM THE MASS PIKE NORTHWARD WITH LOCAL
20 INCH AMOUNTS POSSIBLE.
Wind chills are expected to be -25 or lower in western MA overnight, and between -25 and -15 in the remainder of Massachusetts.
Watches, Warnings and Advisories
· Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect for the entire Commonwealth except Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard until 1 AM Tuesday. A Winter Storm Warning is posted when the forecast calls for at least 6” of snow in a 12 hour period, or 8” of snow in a 24 hour period.
· Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket until 1 AM Tuesday.
· Wind Chill Advisory has been issued for Hampshire County, Hampden County, Worcester County, Franklin County, Middlesex County from7:00 PM tonight to 10:00 AM Tuesday.
